The Portuguese media group Controlinveste has shut up shop on two of its newspapers this week with the closures of free newspaper Global Notícias and the national daily 24 Horas.
According to Diário de Notícias, the closings were announced through an internal memo and attributed to a 'deep structural change of the market of the press'.
In published reports earlier this year it was alleged that 24 Horas' circulation had dropped by over 50% from 2009. The decision to close Global Notícias comes a month after the publication revealed a new design and management direction.
24 Horas announced its closure on its June 29 front page while Global Notícias did not inform its readers about its demise.
