ESPN commits to soccer

Sports broadcaster ESPN has renewed the rights to live coverage of Italian, Dutch and Russian soccer for the 2011/2012 season.

Under the agreement, ESPN have secured exclusive rights to air live coverage of some of Italy’s Serie A, Coppa Italia and Italian Super Cup games, plus coverage of Dutch Eredivisie and Russian Premier Liga matches.

“The renewal of these agreements is an excellent result for all football fans in the UK, giving them access to live and exclusive coverage of some of Europe’s leading football leagues and competitions,” said Jeroen Oerlemans, vice-president TV channels, ESPN EMEA.

Oerlemans added that the deal reflected how ESPN were “building an excellent portfolio of live football and sport on ESPN”.

ESPN also announced that from next season its free ESPN Goals app will offer highlights of English Premier League matches minutes after the end of the game.
