Google, Amazon and M&S rated best brands in UK
18 January 2012
Google, Amazon and Marks & Spencer have been rated the top three brands by UK consumers for the second year in a row, according to YouGov’s BrandIndex league table.
The BBC, Heinz and Sony followed, again no change from 2010. The top 20 most highly-rated brands remained much the same, with Dove being the only new addition at the expense of Nokia.
Of the Top 20, Amazon, Colgate and Cathedral City were the only brands to have improved their rating score over last year. Cadbury, Waterstones and Bosch, along with Nokia, were the only brands to have dropped places within the top 20.
Microsoft came out on top as the most highly-rated brand in the IT/office technology sector, Nokia for the mobile/PDA sector, Skype in telecoms and Money Saving Expert in the online services sector.
Virgin Atlantic was the most highly-rated airline, the Post Office for high-street banks and Premier Inn for Travel Agents/Hotel Guides.
Apple, Facebook and Twitter came in at 40th, 182nd and 615th, respectively.
“It’s been a tough year for the leading brands, very few have managed to improve their perceptions in consumers’ eyes,” says YouGov’s BrandIndex associate director Sarah Murphy. “However, many outside the leaders have certainly bucked that trend, most notably British Airways, Android and HTC, who achieved the highest increase in consumer ratings from 2010 to 2011.”
YouGov’s BrandIndex measures how brands are perceived by consumers in terms of quality, value, customer satisfaction, corporate reputation, general impression and the likelihood of consumers to recommend the brand.
