Google trials sponsored map icons
07 September 2010
Sponsored company logos will become a feature of Google maps after a successful six month trial in Australia.
Local companies National Australia Bank, Bankwest, JB HiFi, Chemist Warehouse and LJ Hooker were able to publish logos on Google maps branding their location and allowing users to click on the logo for more information, replacing current generic place markers.
The addition of the logos when searching maps means users will more easily be able to discover the areas, but will also raise revenue according to Google.
The beta version of sponsored map icons will now be tested in the US market with four advertisers: Bank of America, Target, Public Storage, and HSBC. The feature will also launch on mobile phones in the coming weeks.
