BBC.com launches international sports mobile app

The BBC’s international website BBC.com is expanding its mobile offering with the launch of an iOS sports mobile app for international audiences around the world.

Features of the new app include news, live scores, stats, commentary and analysis for audiences on-the-go. It also offers a customisable menu, allowing users to select their favourite sports to follow.

It launches just ahead of a busy 2013 sporting calendar which includes the UK Premier League, Rugby Union Six Nations Championship and the upcoming F1 season.

The latest move comes amid a series of changes at BBC.com as it looks to boost its mobile offering.  Its mobile sports site was recently updated to include responsive design features, whereby the site will fit to whichever size screen it is viewed on.

According to BBC.com, mobile devices account for a third of all traffic to its international sports site and at times mobile can account for approximately two in five of all visits.

“Thanks to our responsive mobile site, the sports content we provide on mobile devices is already a large traffic driver for the BBC, which gives us a competitive edge in international markets,” says BBC Global News controller of digital and technology James Montgomery. “Now with the launch of our international sports app for iOS devices, we are giving users another simple way to get the content they love, whether it’s checking out how their team have got on, following live text updates on the day’s sporting action or catching up with the latest news.”
