OMG Asia Pacific CEO Cheuk Chiang: ‘Great innovation is coming from the East’

“Now is our time” – that is the message for the Asian media industry from Cheuk Chiang, CEO Asia Pacific at Omnicom Media Group.

Chiang, set to speaking at the Festival of Media Asia Pacific 2015 on Monday (23 March), will urge delegates to believe in the innovative potential of media across APAC.

While acknowledging that much of the major innovation in media and digital has previously arrived from Western markets, Chiang told M&M Global that the tide is slowly turning, led by Chinese internet giants like Tencent, Alibaba and Baidu.

“When you think about innovation that has occurred in the past 30 years, a lot of the great innovation has occurred in Europe or America. Think about Amazon, Google, inventions like the iPod, which democratised music, and YouTube from a content point of view,” he said.

“It seems like true innovation comes from the West, but we look at things differently. Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent offer utility and innovation. We’re absolutely leading the globe in the internet, particularly in markets like China, and also in technological development. Just look at what companies like Sharp are doing with 8K TV technology.

“The great innovation should be coming from the East – now is our time.”
