Sony follows Microsoft into China with PlayStation games console launch

Sony is to launch its latest PlayStation console in China, which this year lifted its ban on foreign video games platforms.

China had prohibited foreign games consoles from being sold since 2000, claiming they adversely effected mental health, but announced it would lift the ban in January.

Microsoft moved first, launching its Xbox One console in September. Now Sony is to become the latest player hoping to tap into the Chinese gaming community, with its PlayStation 4 (PS4) and PlayStation Vita consoles going on sale on 11 January 2015.

Sony said it has teamed up with more than 70 third party software developers and publishers to create games for Chinese audiences, with PS4 will cost Chinese consumers 2,899 RMB ($468), while the PlayStation Vita will cost 1,299 RMB ($209).

“PS4 is expanding at the fastest rate in PlayStation hardware history, and the global gaming community is enjoying the ultimate entertainment experience only available on PlayStation,” said Andrew House, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment.

“We are delighted that we are able to fully launch our business in China, which is a market with great potential. We look forward to delivering exciting software, convenient services and entertainment experiences only possible on PlayStation to the many gamers in China.”
