EBay has announced the appointment of Suzy Deering as chief marketing officer for its North American business, following its split from PayPal.

Deering, who will report to eBay senior vice-president North America Hal Lawton, joins the online marketplace from digital ad agency Moxie, where she was chief executive.

She replaces Richelle Parham, who left eBay in February in the midst of a restructure that consolidated its brand and communications teams.

Deering has more than 20 years’ experience in marketing, both agency- and client-side. Before joining Moxie, she was vice-president of advertising at retailer Home Depot, responsible for integrating digital into the business. She also spent a decade at mobile telecoms firm Verizon in various marketing roles.

After separating from PayPal, eBay said it is “redefining itself with a more aggressive focus on retailing”, with Deering charged with delivering its long-term marketing strategy “around eBay’s spectrum of value”.

In a statement, eBay said that Deering would “bring innovation, a strategic marketing perspective and passionate voice to eBay’s online and offline marketing programs”.

EBay has 157m active buyers and 25m sellers signed up to its commerce platform, with more than 800m listings.

In March, the company overhauled its UK sales team and adopted a “channel agnostic” approach following a programmatic-only trading trial.
