Hyatt hires Gannett CMO Maryam Banikarim to lead global marketing

Hyatt Hotels has announced the recruitment of Gannett CMO Maryam Banikarim to the role of global chief marketing officer.

Maryam Banikarim

Banikarim, who joins on 26 January, replaces Hyatt veteran John Wallis, who it is understood will remain with the company. She will report to Hyatt chief executive Mark Hoplamazian.

She arrives from US publisher Gannett, where she became the firm’s first CMO in 2011, and is credited with helping the company to navigate the separation of its broadcast and digital operations from its print business.

Prior to joining Gannett, she has held senior roles at NBC Universal and Univision Communications during a 20 year career in media and marketing.

“Maryam is an exceptional leader. She brings to Hyatt a wealth of experience working with brands that are experiential, emotional and brought to life in many ways, including through storytelling, all things we believe are essential to our brands and will help us achieve our goal of becoming the most preferred hotel company,” said Hoplamazian.

“Her energy, creativity and focus on people, along with her passion for innovation and proven track record of results, make Maryam a perfect fit.”

Banikarim added: “Hyatt has incredibly powerful global brands. Its passion and commitment to providing authentic, caring experiences for its guests and colleagues, alike, is inspiring. I am excited to lead the marketing team at such a transformative time in the hospitality business and thrilled to be part of the Hyatt family.”
