David Pemsel has been appointed to the role of chief executive of the Guardian Media Group (GMG).
Pemsel, who has held the position of deputy chief executive at the group since 2013, replaces Andrew Miller, who announced back in January that he would be leaving the company in June.
During Millers time at GMG, he oversaw the group five-year strategy to secure its financial future, including the sale of GMGs remaining stake in Auto Trader for £619m last year.
Speaking at the time of this announcement, Miller said: “Having achieved our strategy to streamline the Group, secure its financial future and set it on the path to digital success, I have decided that mid-2015 will be the right time for me to explore new opportunities and for a new editor and chief executive to take the company on the next big phase of the Guardian’s digital growth and international expansion.
“My successor will inherit a business with very strong commercial foundations in place.”
Prior to his position as deputy CEO, Pemsel was chief marketing officer – a role which he held since he joined the company in 2011. He previously worked as group marketing director at Uk broadcaster ITV for five years.
David Pemsel was joined on stage by some of the top leaders in publishing for this years Festival of Media Global in Rome to discuss the future of publishing. He said that even though the burden of a 194-year-old brand weighs heavily both editorially and commercially, quality and trust have been instrumental in the titles international growth.
