Nike CEO hints at wearable tech partnership with Apple

Nike chief executive Mark Parker has hinted that the company is working with tech giant Apple on a new piece of wearable technology.

Nike Wearable

In an interview with Bloomberg TV, Parker said that wearables will be “a big part of the future”.

Nike originally partnered with Apple for the Nike+ running sensor range in 2006 which connected to users’ iPods.

It discontinued its FuelBand fitness-tracking bracelet earlier this year, which saw two of its top engineers move to Apple to work on the Apple Watch.

“Technologically, we can do things together that we couldn’t do independently,” said Parker.

Commenting on the fashion element of the potential product Parker said: “I think the form it takes it critical. You can go from the very geeky kind of wearables today – we’ve all seen some of those – to what I think you’ll see in the future, things that are more stealth, more integrated, more stylish and more functional.”

Parker also highlighted that Tim Cook is currently on the Nike board and that he himself had personally worked with Steve Jobs on the original launch of Nike+.

It is unknown as to what form of wearable tech the two companies will create, but Parker’s comments suggest that it is likely to go beyond a simple health application.
