Twitter ties with Flipboard and Yahoo Japan for promoted tweets syndication

Twitter has announced plans to attempt to monetise the many billions of views of tweets which have been syndicated on third-party websites.

Syndicated Tweets

According to Twitter, in the third quarter of 2014, there were around 185 billion tweet impressions on websites outside the social network.

The firm hopes to offer advertisers an audience far greater than its near-300 million active users by selling promoted tweets on partner websites.

Starting with mobile app Flipboard and Yahoo Japan, promoted tweets will run within Twitter content sections on third-party properties.

In a blog post by senior director, product, Ameet Ranadive, Twitter used the example of car maker Nissan: “Let’s say Nissan is running a Promoted Tweet campaign on Twitter, but also trying to reach a similar audience on a mobile application like Flipboard.

“Through this new partnership, Nissan could run a Promoted Tweet campaign on Twitter, with specific creative and targeting, and simultaneously run the campaign off Twitter, with the same targeting and creative in the Flipboard app.”

Ranadive argues the scheme will provide “great content and monetisation opportunities” for both Twitter and partner sites.

“For the thousands of brands already advertising on Twitter, these new partnerships open a significant opportunity to extend the reach of their message to a larger audience,” he added.
